IMPACT Retail — Inspiring Conscious Fashion Choices Through Education and Innovation

IMPACT Retail is a public-facing sustainability initiative developed by the Singapore Fashion Council (SFC) to educate consumers about the environmental and social impacts of fashion while encouraging more responsible purchasing decisions. Through immersive exhibitions, interactive experiences, educational workshops, and curated retail showcases, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between sustainability awareness and consumer action.

Launched as a multi-year programme under the theme “Shape Tomorrow, Today”, IMPACT Retail seeks to transform how people think about clothing, materials, consumption, and waste. The initiative recognises that consumers play a critical role in shaping the future of fashion and aims to empower them with the knowledge needed to make more informed choices.

A Vision for Responsible Fashion

The vision of IMPACT Retail is to create a conscious consumer movement that reshapes the retail experience by embedding transparency, accountability, and sustainability at its core. By making sustainability accessible and engaging, the programme helps people understand the often-hidden impacts of fashion production, from resource consumption and carbon emissions to labour conditions and textile waste.

The initiative supports Singapore Fashion Council’s broader mission of positioning Singapore as a leading Asian hub for responsible fashion while encouraging greater adoption of circular economy principles across the industry.

A Three-Year Sustainability Journey

IMPACT Retail is structured as a three-year educational journey, with each year focusing on a different material challenge within the fashion industry.

2026 – Denim Decoded

  • Explores the environmental and social impacts of denim production, including cotton cultivation, water consumption, chemical processing, manufacturing practices, and post-consumer waste. Visitors are invited to discover the hidden journey behind one of the world’s most popular fashion items.

2027 – Biomaterials and Next-Generation Textiles

  • Focuses on emerging sustainable materials and innovations that could transform the future of fashion. Topics include bio-based textiles, alternative fibres, and breakthrough material technologies that reduce reliance on conventional resources.

2028 – Plastic Circularity and Textile Waste

  • Examines the growing challenge of synthetic fibres, plastic pollution, and fashion waste while showcasing innovative circular solutions and creative reuse initiatives.

Learning Through Experience

Unlike traditional exhibitions, IMPACT Retail uses immersive storytelling and interactive learning experiences to engage visitors. Activities may include themed installations, educational escape-room concepts, hands-on workshops, upcycling sessions, and retail showcases featuring sustainable brands and innovators.

The initiative is designed to make complex sustainability issues easier to understand while encouraging meaningful behavioural change. By combining education with participation, visitors can explore how everyday purchasing decisions influence environmental and social outcomes across global fashion supply chains.

Supporting Sustainable Fashion Innovation

IMPACT Retail also serves as a platform to highlight sustainable fashion innovators, material developers, designers, researchers, and responsible brands. Through curated showcases and public engagement programmes, visitors are introduced to new solutions that address some of the industry’s most pressing challenges.

The programme demonstrates how innovation, design, and technology can work together to create more sustainable products while supporting the transition towards circular fashion systems.

Community Engagement and Public Awareness

A key objective of IMPACT Retail is to make sustainability education accessible beyond industry professionals. Schools, community groups, businesses, and members of the public are encouraged to participate through workshops, guided experiences, and collaborative events.

By bringing together consumers, brands, educators, innovators, and policymakers, the initiative creates opportunities for dialogue and collaboration that support long-term change across the fashion ecosystem.

Why IMPACT Retail Matters

The fashion industry is one of the world’s largest contributors to environmental degradation, resource consumption, and textile waste. Yet many consumers remain unaware of the true impacts behind the products they purchase. IMPACT Retail addresses this knowledge gap by creating engaging experiences that promote transparency, responsibility, and conscious consumption.

Through education, innovation, and community engagement, the initiative aims to inspire a new generation of consumers who understand the value of sustainable fashion and the importance of supporting responsible brands and practices.
