Have you ever heard of Semakau Island? Semakau is Singapore’s only landfill, mostly filled with ashes produced by incineration plants. The island is forecast to be full by 2035 – much earlier than originally planned. The Government now has targets in place to reduce the waste sent there each day by 30% by 2030.
I’ve been thinking of organising a visit to Semakau Island for a long time, but to be honest, it is a bit difficult. I’ve finally found an alternative though. @thesustainabilityproject_ is accepting expressions of interest for people who would like to go out there for a visit.
Timing: 2pm – 4pm weekdays or 10 – 12pm weekends (which does not include the 2 hours travel time to and from the landfill)
Meeting point: Marina South Pier
Age restrictions: 12 years old and above
Cost: $36
