Urban Nature Stewardship/

Cuifen and Peys led a family group in being stewards of our urban nature areas.

Earlier this year, Cuifen guided nearby residents to make compost at Bukit Gombak Park. The compost was made using two different methods:

1 Aerated thermal composting

2 Compaction and static composting

Plant trimmings took longer to break down with the second method. At the bottom of the compacted heap, we could still see globules of compost particles resembling healthy forest soil. These globules are a sign that the composting process is complete, When added to soil, the compost introduces beneficial microbes and organic matter that help transform the soil ecosystem over time.

The matured compost, along with partially broken-down leaves, were added near a row of small trees.

Peys guided the group to prune the plants. These plants had not been pruned for years, and there were dead, diseased, inward-growing, or weak branches. Some were tangled with climbing plants which block sunlight and airflow.

To close the session, Cuifen shared more about the park. It has just celebrated its 4th birthday!. t sits on the side of what was once Singapore’s second-highest hill The group was surprised to learn the name of the h.ill, which are familiar words to many. And no, the hill is not called Bukit Gombak!

Interested to join the next session? These sessions are currently on a pay-as-you-wish basis. Come along to learn, connect, and care for urban green spaces together.

Tentative dates are on the last slide.

p/s: This activity was carried out with the permission of the park manager and supportive stakeholders. If you feel inspired to prune plants that are cultivated by other people,

check in with the relevant people first.
